THE TWILIGHT ZONE

I have said on occasion, that the past few years have been like an episode of The Twilight Zone. In the classic T.V. show things occurred that would never happen in our reality, but were possible in The Twilight Zone. In the past year and a half, things have happened in America, which two years ago we would have thought to be impossible. Let’s look at some of these Twilight Zone moments:

The DHS changes its focus from Islamic terrorism to possible domestic terrorism

I'm sure most of you remember the infamous report that suggested the following groups be watched as potential terrorists: Military veterans returning from over seas duty, groups apposed to abortion, (I guess this includes most Christians?) Groups apposed to homosexual marriage (most Christians especially Mormons).

I was not an ignoramus; I read the news and had an understanding of what was going on in the world. However, this report shocked me to the core. It angered me, to think men returning from fighting terrorism would be thought of as potential terrorists. This report made me much more politically minded.

We have to spend money to keep from going broke
Many government officials openly declared that the only way to avoid crippling deficits is to increase spending. Only in The Twilight Zone would such reason be accepted.

Cash for clunkers
After the government bailed out GM and Chrysler, they implemented the most brilliant idea ever. Offer people large amounts of cash, to trade in their old cars for new ones. This of course would not be limited to struggling American brands; it would be across the board. The program quickly ran out of money. Most people used the incentive to buy foreign brands, the big winner being Toyota. Those who championed the program, still claim it to be a huge success.

Health Care Reform
We could go on for hours about this, but I'll summarize. We are trillions of dollars in debt, with astronomical future obligations in Social Security and Medicare. These programs are completely unsustainable, so, we decided to add another multi-trillion dollar entitlement program, which most Americans did not want. Only in The Twilight Zone is this possible.

We are going to an asteroid!
The Constellation program had some major flaws, but to scrap it without present alternatives was foolish. It puts us at the mercy of Russia to get our Astronauts into space. The really strange part of this was the shift in focus. Instead of returning to the Moon, we were now going to try and land on an asteroid. What? I can not even think about this without hearing The Twilight Zone music.

The oil spill
Nothing about this thing makes any sense, using conventional logic. An oil rig that was designed to drill two miles deeper than any fossil deposits can be found? The government sends SWAT teams to nearby rigs? The media of course questions none of this. But, what makes this truly a Twilight Zone moment; is a government that seems to want to control everything, simply steps aside and lets BP take the lead. Scores of much more effective ideas for clean-up are ignored and oil washes up on Louisiana beaches. This story is far from over.

Bernanke is named Times man of the year
If I were Elvis, I would have shot my T.V. when I saw this. The man most responsible for the financial crises, is named man of the year? Not only that, he is nominated and receives a 2nd term at the FED? Ben Bernanke is criminal, and should be in jail. Instead he is honored as a national hero. There is something on the wing!

That was just a few of the many Twilight Zone moments that have come to dominate our lives. Do you have a favorite Twilight Zone moment?
